Zack was born in Gongaga on his parents farm. A backwoods town, Zack never got the chance to see the technology going on in cities around him. As an incentive to get out of Gongaga, Zack left to join Shin-Ra's SOLDIER program. He arrived in Midgar and begun training. Although he wasn't very bright thanks to lack of schooling in his rural hometown, Zack's strength and personality won him over in SOLDIER. He was bigger and stronger than most of the other boys, and was easy going and friendly. He was one of the most popular SOLDIERS and was well earned with women.
When Zack first started, he met and befriended Cloud. Cloud was much smaller than the rest and didn't get along well with others, and Zack was the only person he allowed himself to open up to. Even when Cloud failed the SOLDIER exam, Zack still held him close and brought him to work on his first major assigment as a SOLDIER First Class, the Nibelhiem mission.
When Sephiroth lost his mind during the mission, he stabbed Zack and injured him. After Cloud killed Sephiroth, the two were captured by Hojo and expermimented on to be used as Sephiroth clones for five years. They were given injections of Jenova which did not effect Cloud as well as it did Zack.
Zack helped them escape, but was shot by Shin-Ra guards outside of Midgar. Beileved to be dead, a man found Zack and left him severly injured in a pipe in Sector Six. When Meteor hit, a doctor from Mideel found Zack wondering around Midgar mumbling about a "Reunion", obviously the one involving Sephiroth and Jenova. The doctor brough Zack to a Junon Medical Center and helped heal him, though he still could not regain his memory. Fully healed, Zack head out on his own.
Zack is carefree and genuinely happy. He gets along well with everyone, and is actually quite funny and pleasant to be around. Though sometimes he presents himself as a flirt, he really is devoted to only one woman.
