Tayeko was born to a Cetra mother and Wutain father, although her father's blood contains some blood from the Southern tropical continent. Tayeko's mother, Fenan, who happens to be Ifalna's (Aeris' birth mother) sister, died in a boat accident on the Wutai river when she was nearing two years old. Tayeko and her father Shen lived in Wutai together until Tayeko was seven. Her father then took very ill and died, leaving Tayeko with her father's half brother and his wife, Fransisco and Rita Escobar. They both are from the Southern continent, but lived in Midgar where they raised Tayeko.
At this time, Professor Hojo of Shin-Ra's science department was on the hunt for a Cetra, after Ifalna escaped with Aeris. He located Tayeko and had her retrieved from the Escobars by Shin'Ra's rookie Turk, Tseng. At Shin-Ra, Tayeko met Sephiroth, who was only 10 years old at the time. They become friends, but only because Hojo wanted to breed them. They find this out later in their teens.
When Tayeko is fourteen, she and Sephiroth are brought to Hojo's office to learn their destiny. Both children are against it, and Hojo opts to use force, with the help of SOLDIER. During the struggle, Tayeko is accidently killed shot and killed by one.
Tayeko tries to be as cheerful and optimistic as Aeris, but often fails miserably. Inside, she is lonely and confused. She is unhappy where her life has gone, and sees her only escape in the love she holds for Sephiroth.
