Reno was born in the sector three slums of Midgar. He never knew his father, as he ran out on his mother as soon as she learned he was pregnant. His mother was a prositute, and Reno, even at a young age, was not ignorant of the fact. Reno's sister Veronica, or Ronnie as he called her, was born when Reno's mother was accidently impregnated by one of her Johns.
Reno was only thirteen when his mother was murdered. With no family to speak of, Reno was left alone with his younger sister. Too young to get a real job, Reno began running drugs for local crime lords to make money to feed himself and his sister and to pay the rent. As time passed, Reno became a bigger name on the streets and soon started his own gang. Not only did he sell drugs and gang bang, but Reno was becoming an expert at killing. Anyone who needed someone exterminated would ask the young red head who led the Viper gang for help.
Soon rival gangs didn't appreciate Reno's gang or his popularity. They were jealous of Reno's success on the streets. One rival gang found the best way to get to Reno - his sister.
One day when Reno was seventeen, he came home and found his apartment ransacked. In the bedroom, three members of the rival gang had Ronnie tied down. Before Reno could react, he was tied down as well - and forced to watch as his thirteen year old sister was raped and brutally murdered.
The rival gang let Reno go, not anticipating his retaliation. The next week he found their hideout in Sector two and blew it away with tons of C-4/ At least twenty-five members of the gang died in that incident, an event that was all over the news for days.
After that, Reno became more ruthless than before. Not having his sister to care for, Reno felt that he had nothing to live for. When he was killing, exorting, or selling drugs, he was smoking pot himself, or drinking himself into a stupor, a habit that was getting increasingly worse. He went through woman after woman, although not to long ago he said he never would be that way, because of what happened to his mother. It seemed Reno had completely lost control.
Not too longer after that, Reno was approached by Tseng of the Turks. Not only did Shin-Ra know he was responsible for the bombing in sector two, but they knew about almost all of his other crimes - his dealings with mob bosses, his murders, his drug deals, and his gang banging. Sure he was going to jail, Reno was surprised when he was offered the option of prison or a lifetime position with the Turks.
Reno didn't want to work for Shin-Ra, but he had no choice. He didn't want to go to prison, and with Ronnie dead, it didn't matter what he did.
Reno has always been sarcastic in nature. He's not afraid to admit that he's an alcoholic, and he's been after women since he was in his teens. He's also ruthless. He's had a rougher life than most. Although Reno hides behind his toughness, his alcohol and tobacco, his women, and his sardonic quips, inside he is lonely and confused, because he hasn't felt love since he was seventeen years old.
