About the back of the box: There are three
differant box backs, we think there where some printing errors that where fixed with each
box difference such as paragraph errors, copy and paste errors and pages out of order. The
adventure book also had similar errors corrected in later printings.
The early printings had black and white images.
At some point one of the pictures ( K-7 ) was
covered with a copyright sticker in the lower left.
On the later printings many pictures where changed
and color was added, also a single content picture in the center bottom was added.
Ultimatly this new set of colorized pictures where reused for the 2nd Edition rules box
backs.
Starship Combat (SC) Rules note: At the time of the first edition
release, the first installment of the Starship Combat Rules (SC) was introduced. These
rules are the original and a "abbreviated system" when compared to the
"Command & Control" rules found in the later released Starship Combat
products.
This old system (SC) generaly supported upto 12 players, 6 on each side with a maximum of
two seperate ships(you can reduce the number of players perside by haveing each player
handling more than one panel.) The players would each represent a station on the bridge.
Instead of a tactical board game, the role playing combat system offered players the
chance to sit at "consoles" for the various bridge stations and perform their
duties by allocating power to various systems, setting course, activating the shields, and
firing weapons. The Gamemaster then used a Simplified System to represent other ships.
Which basicly is a "Master Control Panel" which is found in later released
Starship rules. The Simplified System is usable by the players if they wish, pacticulary
if a single player controlled one or more ships.
The Starship Combat System(SCS) was revised three times to ultimatly become the 4th
installment of Ship Combat Rules; 2003 Star Trek
Starship Tactical Combat Simulator.

Paramount was pleased enough with Ford's "The Final Reflection" prior to
distribution of the book, and had ask to have his unpublished notes submitted to Paramount
so that future authors could work from them. Fantasimulations Associates also used these
in the creation of this RPG supplement. Paramount accepted "The Final
Reflection" as canon (something done with very, very few other novels) and encouraged
FASA in there decision to base there view of the Klingon Empire on it as well as the
series episodes. It was based solidly on accepted canon and Paramount's plans AT THAT
TIME.(prior to TNG when Klingons and everything about there story from the begining
changed drastically)

TAKE THE CON, LIEUTENANT
STARSHIP TATICS
All that stands between the Klingon battlefleet and Starbase One is a handfull of
Starfleet vessals. Your leadership must pull them together and make them work, or they'll
be destroyed by the enemy force of D-7 Battlecruisers.
A starship captain has his command at his fingertips, but you must take the role of a
Starfleet commodore, with command over this entire small fleet. You must be a step ahead
of the enemy, or see the vessals that depend on you for tactical direction destroyed one
by one.
Two D-7's sweep to starboard, disruptors blazing. Only one of your ships can bring phasers
to bear quickly enough, but her captain reports heavy casualties already. The Klingon
squadron leader has turned only weak aft shields to the "Hood" at flank. It only
takes one mistake - has the Klingon leader made it, or have you?
As you bark out orders, you know this is, after all, only a simulation excercise. But if
you're really only a Lieutenant in training, why are you gripping the arm of the command
chair with nervous fingers? Next time, it could be real ships, real lives in your hands.
Then, there will be no second chances...
In this section of the STAR TREK II, STARSHIP COMBAT SIMULATOR, you are in direct command
of an array of starships facing a deadly, spaceborne enemy. You must use your forces to
best advantage against your opponent. Fleets from all the galactic superpowers of the STAR
TREK universe are at your disposal for simulating space battles in preparation for the
always-present possibility of war.
STARSHIP TATICS is designed for two or more commanders controlling from one ship each
to the entire fleets, included in this box are the basic rules for begining play, the
advanced rules to expand play with more option and finally the expert rules for more
detailed play.
Can be played as a stand-alone game, or used to play out Starship Combat for "Star
Trek: The Role Playing Game", using the "Command & Control" rules
TAKE THE CON, LIEUTENANT
COMMAND AND CONTROL
As you slip into the commmand chair, its all upto you. Automatically you call for status
reports.
"Power status nominal sir," confoirms the instants regally from the chief
engineer, "Read for whatever you need."
"Course locked in and on the screen," reports the navigator crisply.
"Sensors report an unidentified vessal closing course 73 -40 mark 12." This
isn't news to you - it's what you've been sent to investigate.
"Open hailing frequencies and try all standard identification methods," you
order and your communications officer follows through practically before you finish
speaking.
"No response, sir, they're ignoring us."
"Object is definitely a manned starcraft matching our speed on an intercept
course." the science officer elaborates. "Too soon to make complete
identification."
Suddenly everyone is looking at you. All of these highly trainned Starfleet Officers
are waiting for your commands. What you do and say in the next few secounds will decide
the fate of your ship and her crew...
This section of the game, STAR TREK II, STARSHIP COMBAT puts you direct puts you
directly in the role of a starship officer on the bridge during a combat simulation run.
Using your control panel you have an instant readout on the functions of your part of the
ship and can effect changes in systems status - all under the direction of the captain.
For the player in the Captains seat there is no control panel - just the awsome
responsibility of giving orders and directing the ship's fate. Command and Control is
played by 3 to 6 players (serving as the starship bridge crew), plus an
"instructor" who sets up and monitors the situation while controllong the
opposing vessels.
FASA extracted and revised its starship combat system(SCS) from its
original Star Trek offering...

more modern design(2271) FASA based on the similarities of the ST:III BoP(appeared 2285).
More likely to help tie the games history in better with canon.

To boldly go ...
Step into the command seat of a starship for the Federation, the Klingon Empire,
Romulan Star Empire, Gorn Alliance, or an Orion Pirate raider with the new Star Trek
Starship Tactical Combat Simulator.
This game lets you simulate starship battles in the Star Trek universe. (TOS,
STI,STII,STIII) Its a hex-based military simulator that you can play as one of five
different factions which includes the Federation (of course), Klingon Empire, Romulan Star
Empire, Gorn Alliance, or as an Orion pirate raider. Players select from a variety of
ships described in the rule book, spend about five minutes copying the information from
the rule book to their "control panel" sheet. (There are also pre-filled
out sheets you can photocopy if you know which ships everyone will be using in). The
"control panel" mats represent control consoles for different crew positions and
counters each player could move along them reflecting the ship's state and their efforts
to effect it. This clever conceit turned ship combats into a dramatic sessions of
delegated responsibilities. The Captain's player would be shouting commands to the various
crewmen players who, in turn, would roll dice and adjust the panels in front of them as
they shouted back the results. A good storyteller, meanwhile, would be spitting out color
commentary along with overviews of the changing tactical situation. You will spend about
25 to 30 minutes or so allocating energy, spending movement points, calculating to-hit
numbers, taking into account damage modifiers, and finishing combat.

Example Of Hex Sheet(1985) |
The Fasa Hex Sheet is specially made when compared to the standard hex
sheet. Each hex itself measures 1 1/25" from point to point and 1 1/16" from
side to side (outside measurements) while using 1inch counters. The STCS Hex Mapefield
overall dimensions are 22" x 34". The Hexs are numbered in thirty-five groups of
twenty, so 0001-0020 , 0101-0120 , 0201-0220 and so on upto 3420. This special number is
use for published scenerios for placement of obstacles, and used for varous purposes such
as tracking cloaked ships that move without a counter present.

The Back of the Box.
Special note about printed versions: Theres two known versions of the
STCS, an early printing and a later printing. FASA at some point "updated" the
rulebook but left some text out when they did this. If you turn to pg37 of your STCS and
look in the top right corner and find that the title of the section for Self Destruction
is present, then you have the early printng. If it's missing, then you have the later
print.
Early Printing: The earler printings have the Self Destruct title and rules presents
minus the updated text. The updated text can be found on the official errata sheet if
available. Also, the Command and Control section on early printings has text that simply
was lifted from the ST:III rules and inserted into the section.
Later Printing: Unfornatly the only text present is the updated text, the actual rules
for self destrut is missing, they omitted it out in the later printings and replaced it
with a paragraph explaining why ship captains wouldn't blow up their own starships. Also,
the Command and Control section in Later printings the text was corrected. I'm unsure at
this point what was exactly changed, added or omitted. Apperantly its fairly obvous that
there where changes.
This later print is most likely found included with the Deluxe version of the RPG box
set. There's no know way to tell the differance from the eraly print to the later print
from the box or the covers of the book.
About the Errata: The errata sheet comes with some of the STCS Box sets and with some
Deluxe Boxed Sets of the RPG which included the starship combat game with the "last
version" changes. The self-destruct cop-out was on it, as well as a
clarification/correction on a firing example given in the rulebook and counters to
photocopy for the D-10 and Gallant Wing.

About: FanPro license included the right to use the whole of fasa's published material.
Because of limited supply of original graphics they used unlicensed material from
"Worlds Of Star Trek" and other books with trek fiction to create their
WunderWelten articles. (FanPro was sued because of this and the unlicensed use of
paramount copyrights), and were forced to discontinue the production of their
trek-products. Fanpro used to sell the hardcover-book (the only item produced) at a loss
(10 german mark (approx. $4.50 at that time)). All of fanpro's information that was not
borrowed from other sources was invented in house by "semi-trekkies", who were
