Vintage
Starships II - (VSII) ,
old site
Fasa Starship Combat 2150-2260 era, This is a redesigned version of the site. Our Mission
was originally to recreate the missing chapters from Star Fleet's past for the FASA Star
Trek Ship Combat Tactical Simulator game, it has now expanded slightly to try to reconcile
FASA's Star Trek universe with the more mainstream Technical Fandom Star Trek Universe.
This site contains the rules for creating and playing the Federation (and Earth) Starships
of the 2150-2230 era. The Original FASA ship construction manual allows creation of ships
from 2230 onwards. The modules available on site extend this back to 2150, and the Romulan
War era. The site also contains FASA conversions of ships from that period sourced from
the classic Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology, the superb Starfleet Museum website, the
excellent Ex-Astris Scientia website, and also some ships built to conjectural FASA
designs. |

Trek Campaigns (MCA) - 18inchfly
Fasa Material - New optional Rules and Campaigns, This site has been created
to support play in Star Trek campaign games run. All campaigns are set in
FASA's Star Trek Role Playing Game system, and specifically use the Starship
Tactical Combat Simulator (STCS) for tactical engagements. Ship Information,
Campaigns, Game Rules & Equipment, Rules Modifications, Clarifications, and
Additions (MCA) provides updates to the Ship Construction Manual of the
Starship Tactical Combat Simulator rules. It addresses some of the gaps and
omissions in the original rules and adds rules to handle situations not
otherwise covered. |

FASA Nacelles
Notes about sizes used. The "cut and paste" method of kitbashing used in the
FASA Starfleet Ship Recognition Manual partially obscures the fact that the nacelles (and,
in some cases, the primary saucers) used in the ships are of different sizes. A
measurement of each picture based on the stated size of the ship represented will show
this to be the case. Many nacelles come out to a unique size, but I've collected them into
eight broad categories as shown in the table below. |

two campaigns, The first game was set in the Next Generation time period, beginning in
what would have been the 5th season of ST:TNG, and concerned the Starship Excalibur. Of
course, rabid Trekkies know that Peter David's New Frontier novels also use the Excalibur.
Well, my campaign ended well before the novels came out, but I have amended the entries in
the Excalibur's logs that are posted here to include continuity from the New Frontier
books. The second campaign was set during the Classic Trek period, specifically in the
period near the end of the original series and prior to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. |

| If your book is falling apart; goto your
local library and see if they can fix it and pay them, its okay there a library, and then
put the book away and download the digital reproductions, or better yet scan them in.
*Limitations of the digital reproductions is usually the quality of the photos and
drawings in the books don't reproduce well under non-optimized situations. Sometimes the
text is light or the original scan process used low quality and the pdf conversion lowered
that quality even more. Then the file size issue, I seen books that where 200Megs look
worse than a book at 35Megs... Due to all this you still may have to pull the old book out
of storage to get high-quality scans of certain items, For use in your FASA projects. Also check the many FASA Yahoo Groups and Web Sites; many of those
locations contain portions of the FASA ST
material, available in one form or another.

| Don't
Want to use pdf's? ; You can use the quickest and easiest method of scanning the
pages of the book in as standard bmps or directly to jpeg. You should use 300 dpi when
scanning and any adjustments you need to do should be done with the scanner software first
if possible, like cropping, contrast/brightness and sharpening primarily. If your software doesn't have such features, dump the scans out as bmps
and use an art program. Remember to crop the image and size it as a standard piece of
paper. Supply the size in inches. (This isn't necessary as most printer software allows
you to print according to the size of paper used) Reduce the amount of colors if possible,
text pages usual only need 2 colors, Black and White, some may require grayscale. (jpegs
don't allow B/W) When saving, save as jpeg, the compression usually defaults to 90% quality,
and normally supplies a decent file size. You only want to compress a jpeg file once.
BLACK and WHITE or GRAYSCALE
1-Place the magazine page square to the scanners window
2-Scan in at 300dpi
3-Do a good Crop of the Image (right up close to the edge of drawings or text)
4-Save scan as a jpeg (grayscale photograph)
5-Set jpeg compression to full (if there's a drawing on the page set compression to
75% or so)
6-View the saved file and zoom in, the letters should be perfectly formed, if
there's small
lettering or a drawing the lines should be visibly separated.
MANUAL
A More complex method is to save the image as a bmp and edit the image manually for the
amount of colors and contrast, but you have to have allot of practice to really benefit,
allot of comparing file sizes Vs technique.
The lighter contrast adjustment removes background marks or the reverse of the page
showing through and reduces file size. This is common with FASA Star Trek
pages and especially magazine articles. Reducing the colors (or grayscale colors) reduces
file size. Cropping reduces file sizes and enlarges the letters.
When MAKING A PDF
I find allot of the PDF's are usually un-cropped
and the details where fuzzy or broken up. I seen them too with too much compression
as well.
Of course you can experiment with different image formats
depending on the results you want but the above method will produce printable pages, and
will look identical on a computer monitor. OR
you can send me the raw images and I can work with them from here before
adding them to a PDF. The whole Idea is to have the best un-bloated PDF you
can while retaining the quality of the scans of original books or parts. |
