The Memory Burns...

The memory burns like iron on flesh
Melting skin from bones
Like pits of garbage flaming in the night
Like the smoke that filled his home

Hate was sharpened on suffering
Like so many rocks
Cradled in leather slings
To create rage, fear, or shock

Anything and nothing, solidarity and
Just pure spite
He went running down those tunnels
Constantly glancing over in fright

Into the darkness behind him
The terror, the pain, the hate
A family's last son,
A planet's one true fate

Millions still suffer
Still singing their song
They'll wait for him still; hungry
people don't stay hungry for long

He will go back, this he promises himself
And he gazes out at countless star-light fires
The memory never forgotten, it whispers in his veins
'hope lies in the smouldering rubble of empires'
