“Just close your eyes and let me do this maintenance check on you, Rommie.” Harper held the scanner as he looked at Rommie’s forearm.
“I told you, it’s fine.”
“If it were fine, then why are you having difficulty moving it?”
“Because, I was sparring with Trance and she yanked on it. I’d be able to ignore my pain receptors if you hadn’t decided to install that failsafe to keep me from shutting that subroutine down. Pain is another feature that isn’t necessary for my functioning, by the way.”
“Hey, you wouldn’t be able to appreciate the concept of pleasure if you can’t understand pain. I just wanted to make sure you could feel both.” Harper ran his scanners and shook his head. “She tore up half of your circuitry. I’m surprised you can move your arm at all. What the hell were you two doing down there?”
“I already told you, we were sparring.” Rommie kept her face straight ahead, not looking at Harper. With any other member of the crew this would have worked, since they assumed Rommie was always multitasking.
With Harper, however, things were different. He noticed and put the scanner down. “What aren’t you telling me, Rommie?”
“Nothing. I already told you what you…”
“Liar. I know that expression, Rommie. I programmed it into your neural net, remember? You’re hiding something.”
Rommie let out a fake breath and stared at the floor.
Harper crosses his arms over his chest. “I’m not fixing your circuitry until you tell me.”
Rommie winced. “All right, all right. As you know, Trance and I are both up for leave in the next few weeks. And we both wanted to invite you along. Problem was, Dylan isn’t likely to grant you time off for both weeks, and neither of us were willing to go to the same location for leave. So, we decided to settle the argument with a sparring match.
“You both wanted to take me on leave with you?”
“We both have to admit, you can be quite fun on vacation. You can be a little annoying when you get drunk and hit on us, but you’re still fun.”
“You and the golden girl in a catfight… The things I miss while working.” Harper shook his head and began to cut an opening into Rommie’s skin so he could rewire her circuits. “Seems you went to a lot of trouble just to lose, Rommie.”
Rommie smiled. “Oh, I didn’t lose. Trance is on Med Deck right now, repairing two broken legs.”
Harper nearly dropped his nanowelder. “You broke both her legs?”
“No, Trance broke Tyr’s legs. See, after she lost the sparring match to me, she had a rematch with Tyr. He wanted to go to Topeka Drift with Beka.”
“What I’d give to be a fly on the wall of the Med Deck right now.”
Rommie smiled. “No, you don’t. Trust me.”
