Standing in the doorway to the botanical lab Dylan watched them, Trance giving and Harper taking the comfort they both needed. With a small, sad, smile he went off in search... of what he wasn't sure. He only knew that he needed to search. He needed what he was searching for. But he didn't know what it was.
Striding down the corridor he thought back to Tyr's myth. 'Angel of Death.'
Closing his eyes Dylan leaned against the wall for support. Unable to stand he slid down to the floor and dropped his head into his hands. 'One hundred thousand people...' he thought, his throat closing off tightly. 'I've killed one hundred thousand people. Tyr's myth was right. I have become Death.'
His head in his hands Dylan fought to keep control. 'I am a High Guard officer! I will maintain control! I will not give in to my emotions!' screamed in his head.
He was oblivious to Rommie until she was kneeling next to him her hand on his arm. Bringing his head up he looked at her trying to pull himself together.
"Captain...?" Rommie said, her voice laced with concern.
"I'm fine Rommie. I'm fine."
"The tears in your eyes would say otherwise."
Closing his eyes he turned away, disgusted with himself that he had let it get that far.
"An officer of the High Guard will maintain control at all times," Rommie quoted. "Never allowing his emotions to interfere with his duty." Moving her hand to his head she spoke softly. "Your duty has been done."
"I am a High Guard officer..." Dylan began.
"You are human."
With her three, softly spoken, words Rommie broke down the wall holding Dylan back. With his eyes closed and his head back silent tears rolled down his face. "I have become death," he said, repeating his words from the battle.
"You did what was necessary. You had no choice but one. You have to believe that."
"I have killed during war before. Why is this one so different?"
Rommie was silent as she contemplated her answer. Looking at him she knew her answer would not be good enough. He had to find his own. "You tell me."
Opening his eyes Dylan looked at her. His mind knew the answer yet his heart could not believe it. "I can't..."
"You have to Dylan. You have to..."
He knew she was right. 'I have to believe.' Getting to his feet he looked down at Rommie. "Where's Tyr?"
"The Garden."
