It was a typical afternoon for Dylan, he did some housework, and made dinner, as his son, Hugh, his five year old, was playing. While cooking, he thought about how his life had progress for the past several years.
A while after defeating the Magog, the Commonwealth was well on its way and could go on without him. During this time, he was able to get to know Molly better, and eventually married her. He was able to retire though sometimes he was a consultant for the new High Guard. However, she went up to the ranks to become a commander, while he decided to stay at home to take care of Hugh, as his injuries, which were another reason for his retirement, prevented him from active service. Dylan spent his days, doing housework, taking care of Hugh, studying military history, and playing basketball on the court that Molly had built for him as a birthday gift.
Just as the food was going to have to require reheating, Molly came home, in her uniform.
“Hi honey. Sorry I’m late,” she said as she kissed him.
“You’re just in time.” Their dining room table was made from a beautiful red wood, as were the chairs. Molly, aside from a few wrinkles looked almost the same as she did when Dylan first met her.
“So, what’s for dinner?”
“A new recipe Edna gave me.”
“Edna?”
“Her husband is a sergeant.”
“I see. How was your day?”
“Typical. I took Hugh to his playdate, played some basketball, and did some reading.”
“ I did the usual. You know, personal reports and recommendations. They seem to be due every other week.”
“I remember the feeling.”
Molly just smiled, though there was something off about it, in Dylan’s eyes. However, he decided that it was his imagination.
“Hugh! Time for dinner!” Dylan called out.
There was no answer.
“Hugh!”
Hugh came out from his room, where he had been playing with little figurines. He had his father’s eyes and nose, but his mother’s hair and face shape.
“Mama!” he called, as he saw her and ran to her.
“Hi honey!” Molly said cheerfully as she kissed and hugged the boy. “How’s my little sweetums?”
“Fine.”
“Honey, why is he wearing that awful purple jumpsuit. It looks awful on him.”
“It’s his favorite.”
“But it’s so dirty, you should get it cleaned.”
“Arent’ you gonna ask about Bilbo?” the child chirped in.
“Bilbo?”
“His new imaginary friend,” Dylan replied “They just met today.”
“I see. How is he sweetie?”
“Fine.”
“So, tell me more about how work is.” He really wanted some adult conversation, though Molly just wanted to relax and not think about work. “Who do you plan on recommending for promotion?”
“Well, Jade glowing in sunset is a good officer, but she’s not good with people, but lieutenant Vasquez is better with people, but not as good in his job.”
“That’s a tough one,” Dylan remarked. “There are no other available choices?”
“They are the top ones.”
As Dylan was advising Molly on who she should pick, Hugh started to daydream, as he liked to do.
“Honey, why don’t you eat some more?” Molly asked.
“I’m not hungry.”
“But you’re so skinny. Haven’t you tried to get him to eat more?”
“Yes, I have.”
“Maybe he needs vitamins.”
“The doctor said he was fine, his skinniness is just a phase I’ve been trying to get him to do exercises.”
A while later, when Hugh had gone to bed, they were sitting on couch, as Dylan was massaging her feet.
“So, are you working late tomorrow? I need to know if I need to make dinner later.”
He felt Molly’s feet sort of tense up, as she replied.
“I do, honey. I have to get some paperwork done.”
“Okay. I know how that is. So long and tedious.” Dylan remembered always hating having to do paperwork
“Yeah,” she said as she started kissing his neck. “Maybe what I could use is some luck right now.”
“But I’m tired.”
“You don’t have to do anything, but let me spoil you,” she replied
“No, it’s okay, honey. I had a hard day.”
“Please?”
“Okay.”
The next day, his friend Edna, invited him to have dinner, while Hugh was with a friend, and Molly called to tell him not to wait for her. As he was approaching the lit patio area, someone came up to him.
“Is it true that you are a former High Guard Captain?”
“Yes.”
“I was wondering if you could help me.”
“Yes?”
“There are these beings that live under my house, and I need someone with your expertise. You can bring you son with you.”
“How do you know me?”
“I’m also a friend of Edna’s.”
“I see.”
“Sorry, but I don’t really have time.” Dylan thought the man was being nuts.
“I’ll pay you.”
“I don’t need the money.”
“Dylan, won’t you please help him?” Edna chimed in. “You could bring Hugh, and Molly has been working late a lot lately.”
“Alright.” He only agreed because he figured that the poor man needed to be humored and wanted the company.
So they all sat down to dinner, at the diner, that was close to the main base of the Home guard of the New Commonwealth’s capital planet. Molly had gotten herself in the home guard, so she didn’t have to go on long deployments that would get her away from home.
It wasn’t until very late that night that Molly came back home. Dylan was in bed, pretending to read, as she came into the bedroom. She was in very good spirits.
“Hey honey!” she said with a smile as she kissed him.
“Where were you?”
“Doing paperwork, and other things hat needed to be tended to.” She seemed more tired, but in a fake sort of way.
“You seem in awfully good spirits for someone who just did a lot of paperwork.”
“I’m happy to be done with it,” she said.
“I see.”
“So, what were you up to?”
“I had dinner with Edna and some odd friend of hers, who claims that there are these ‘beings’ in his house, and thinks that my expertise could help him. I agreed as a favor to Edna. Did you eat the leftovers?”
“Yeah. The dinner was good. Did you make sure Hugh had enough?”
“I did.”
As Molly went to shower, Dylan noticed that she hummed to herself, something that she rarely did. When she came out, she wore a black lingerie that he had never seen before.
“Since when do you have that?” Dylan asked.
“Uh, for a while.”
“I see.“
“Honey, Why don’t I give you a massage.”
“Huh?”
“To make up for my tardiness.”
“Why?”
“No reason.”
Meanwhile, one of Molly’s work companions came over to the house. As she knocked, she noticed that it was Dylan who answered.
“Is Molly home?”
“She’s at a meeting. Why aren’t you there?”
“No, there wasn’t any meeting.”
“Oh of course, tonight was her paperwork night,” Dylan said, hiding his realization.
“Why isn’t she at the office? She left early to be with you.”
“She had some errands.”
“Well, I just wanted to give her this stuff, could you make sure that she gets it?”
“Okay.”
Hours later, Molly came home late enough for Hugh to be already asleep.
“Hi honey,” she said as she came home and went into the shower.
“Hey,” Dylan said, his blank face hidden in the sink as he washed dishes. After she came out, he asked, “So, how’d the meeting go?”
“Great, though it was way too long”
“That’s funny,” he commented. “One of your co-workers came by and said that there was no meeting.”
“Uh.. she must have gotten the wrong date.”
“And she said you left work early.”
Molly just looked at him. Dylan knew that he should have waited before confronting her, but he was just too devastated and angry to wait.
