I felt the burn from the acid in all of my systems. I couldn’t move, only lay helpless like a slug on dry land.
I wondered where Harper was. I thought I felt him working on me from somewhere but could not guess his location. All I could do was wait for the venting to be completed on the outer decks so I could shut down the rest of my AI and let Harper take over manual control.
Only where was he? I hurt all over and rolled around on Command, in pain. I could hear Beka and Tyr argue about how to proceed, or whether Dylan was out there trying to get us out at all.
Which was silly, really. Dylan was not the type of man to leave his ship behind.
It wasn’t until I heard Beka’s voice above me and I had about eighty five percent of my core AI shut down that I really concentrated on regaining control.
Beka said, “Can you contact slipstream core? We have to find Harper?”
I panicked. What do you mean he’s not on Command? He’s the only one who can really fix me. “Harper?”
I focused one Beka’s face as she said, “You know, short fast talker, too smart for his own good… hopelessly in love with you?”
Hopelessly in love with me? I know Harper’s sweet and has a big crush and all but… What is she, out of her mind? Trying my best to show my annoyance I replied, “I know Harper.”
I closed my eyes and went looking for him, only to panic a second time when I realized he couldn’t be in the slipstream core. It had a hull breach. If he went in there before the breach happened…. I did my best to look around frantically.
To my relief, I found him in Conduit number One Four Seven. Thank the Empress, I thought I lost him. “Harper’s in Conduit number One Four Seven.”
I closed my eyes, borrowed my AI’s holoimager, and went after him.
