Designed using HTML. I dredged up what I could remember from my grade 10 computer class and learned the rest from Annabella's HTML Help, which has a very wonderful basic intro to HTML with fantastic examples. By far the easiest to understand HTML page I've ever found.

Then I went to Hypergurl Hosting Services, which has amazing tutorials on HTML, Microsoft FrontPage, JavaScript, etc. It also has free scripts for neat things you might want to do on your page. Anything beyong basic HTML on my page comes from there--the no-underline links, the random image code--they even have a popup window generator. You just decide what features you want to have and it builds the rest. If I ever switch to paid webhosting I'll probably go there because they're so helpful.

I should give credit to Rotten Tomatoes for some of the movie pics--they're mostly a movie review site with links to reviewers from all over North America, but they have great photo galleries of good size pics for some movies, especially blockbusters or newer movies.

Free webhosting is provided by Anzwers, with unlimited webspace and discreet ads, which are at least somewhat customized so that they might be of interest to someone visiting my site. I didn't realize they did this (it's automatic) until I actually looked at the ads on my pages. There are a couple of drawbacks: I have to update at least once every sixty days or my account will be closed (without notification), and ads make frames impossible (well, not impossible, but they make frames sites look like complete crap), which was such a bitch when I was putting the site together. Not so much now, though.

I also really like the way the Anzwers file manager works. It's web-based, rather than using a seperate FTP program or something like that--I haven't had good luck using FTP programs. Here, I have a choice between coding my pages from html myself on the web (or off the web and copying and pasting) or uploading files from my hard drive. I have FrontPage on my computer but I don't really use it, mostly because I'm incredibly anal and I like to have control over every little detail of my site design. Using FrontPage means that there's often code on my pages that I don't understand, and that bothers me. Like I said, anal.
About Me

It's always so hard to decide what to say about myself; I know everything about me already, and I can never decide what kinds of things other people might want to know. But I'll give it a shot:

My name is bellona (well, not in real life.) I run this site, and I also have a LiveJournal, also called Templum Bellonae, where I post new fic recs as well as anything else I feel like.

I'm a 20-year-old, female student at the University of Toronto. I'm majoring in Classics and Classical Civilization. Toronto is my hometown. Since my mother died two years ago, I've lived in an apartment on the first floor of a house with a roommate. Who is great, by the way--I couldn't have found a better person to live with if I'd looked for six years.

I've been reading fanfic since 1995 or '96, I can't remember exactly. I started out reading Paris/Torres (from Star Trek Voyager, for the uninformed) fanfic. At some point later I found other fandoms, and then slash. I'm now an expert at finding new fandoms and good stories because I've done it so often. I quite regularly read fic from fandoms I've never heard of; I'm willing to do a little internet research to find out about a show or a movie in order to read fic by an author I like.

I've never written any fanfic and I don't ever intend to. I am totally incapable of thinking up a decent plot or sticking with one idea long enough to develop it. It's a shame because I would love to be able to write, even badly, but I just don't have that kind of creativity.

Off the internet, I still spend most of my time reading. My dad (who split up with my mom before I was born but is still around and calls me every day, although I haven't lived with him even for weekend visits since I was twelve) used to accuse me of being anti-social because I read so much. At the time he pissed me off, but (as so often happens with my father) I now realize that he had a point, at least on some level. When I say that I read all the time as a kid, I really do mean all the time: during dinner, walking down the street, at school under my desk...my best friend read as much as I did, and when she came over we would often read together. I don't regret it, but I can see that my childhood would have been easier, socially, if I'd taken my nose out of a book every now and then.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Want the Grinch font displayed above? Just follow these instructions:
  1. Download the PC TrueType Font file or the Mac Font to your desktop or wherever. (Since I don't have a Mac I'm not entirely sure whether the Mac Font works or not--if you have a Mac try it and let me know.
  2. Unzip the file.
  3. Move the grinched file to your Fonts folder--on a PC you'll find it if you open your 'My Computer', then your 'C:' drive, then 'WINDOWS'. Again, I'm not sure where this folder would be on a Mac, but I'm sure you can search for it.
  4. You're done!
