Time to learn some words that are related to anime! Get ready to learn some Japanese! ^o^ I will eventually put up a list of random Japanese words I know... Anime: short for "Japanese animation." Basically, any cartoon from Japan. Anime Convention: A time of the year where anime fans all gather together to spend money on anime merchandise and meet other anime fans and to "cosplay." Baka: Japanese for "stupid" or "idiot." Used very often in anime fandom. Bishie: Short for either "bishoujo" or "bishounen." (the "bishie" in my name refers to "bishounen") Bishoujo: Female version of "Bishounen" Bishounen: Literally means "pretty boy" in Japanese. Anime fans usually refer "bishounen" to any attractive anime guy. Chibi: Japanese for "kid." In anime fandom, "chibi" refers to the smaller and chubbier version of a character - s/he will have bigger eyes, bigger head (usually same size as the body), and shorter limbs. Chibis are irresistably adorable! Also called "SD" form. Cosplay: short for "costume play." Anime fans "cosplay" by wearing costumes that resemble an anime or video game character. Very popular at "anime conventions." Doujinshi: a fan-made comic. It can have original characters or characters from an already-existing anime Dub: the process of replacing Japanese voices with another language in a video. Unforgivable... ruining the original beautiful voices... Fandub: "dubbing" of an anime done by fellow anime fans Fansub: subtitling of an anime done by fellow anime fans Fanart: art drawn by anime fans based on an anime Fanfic: short for "fan fiction." Stories written by anime fans based on anime or a source of entertainment. Fan Service: Refers to scenes in anime that have only one purpose: please the fans. Usually have "bishounen," "bishoujo," "chibis," or cute animals. Fillers: episodes of an anime that was not in the original manga series Glomp: the sound effect of hugging something or someone really tightly. Sometimes used as a verb. Harem: an anime with a guy surrounded by three or more girls Hentai: "Pervert" in Japanese. In anime fandom, "hentai" is a genre of anime that shows nudity and 6 scenes. Highly recommended to avoid! Hiragana: Japanese characters used for native Japanese words Huggle: A word mixing "hug" with "cuddle" so it's a combination of the two Kanji: Chinese characters used in Japanese Katakana: Japanese characters used for foreign words Kawaii: "cute" in Japanese. Manga: "comic" in Japanese. Refers to Japanese comic books. Majority of animes are based on a manga series. Manga-ka: Author/creator of a manga Manhua: "comic" in Chinese. Refers to comics from China or Hong Kong. Manhwa/Manwa: "comic" in Korean. Refers to Korean comics. Mecha: another word for "giant robot" One-Shot: some manga-kas draw/write a simple, one-chapter story. OVA or OAV: "Original Video Animation" or "Original Animation Video" - videos that are for home releases, not for television or theatres. OST: "Original SoundTrack" music in anime Otaku: Japanese word for someone who is absolutely obsessed Raw: Either an anime episode or manga chapter that is still in its original Japanese Scanlation: manga translated by fellow anime fans Screenshot: a picture taken in an episode of an anime SD: "Super Deformed" (see "Chibi") Seiyuu Japanese for "voice actor/actress" Shoujo: Japanese for "girl." Refers to the genre of anime targeted for girls. Shoujo-ai: Love between two girls. Stronger than "Slash" but weaker than "Yuri" Shounen: Japanese for "boy." Refers to the genre of anime targeted for boys Shounen-ai: Love between two boys. Stronger than "Slash" but weaker than "Yaoi" Slash: A slight hinting of a relationship between two boys or two girls. Might be just flirting. Sub: short for "subtitled." Japanese voices with translated subtitles. Yaoi: Genre of anime centered on a love relationship between two boys. Most likely will show "hentai" scenes. Yuri: Girl version of "Yaoi" |
