The aliens pulled Harper up and out of the cell he shared with Dylan. The door was closed behind him and he was pushed forwards. One of the three aliens undid his handcuffs and pushed him forward again. Trance had no idea what species they were, and she found that she really didn’t care. Her eyes were fixed on Harper as they pushed him towards the torture bench. His eyes widened in horror, Harper had seen one of these before and in an instant, Trance knew there wasn’t a chance in hell that he was going to let himself be put on one again.
Suddenly, with more speed anyone had seen in him before, a speed born of desperation, Harper’s elbow flicked back catching the alien behind him directly in the nose. As the alien stumbled back, Harper grabbed his gun and turned to face the other two. He got off one shot before two volleys of fire hit him in the torso and upper thigh. He turned sideways, his eyes loosing focus. He slowly sank to his knees, looking in disbelief at the blood staining his shirt. Slowly he looked up and into Trance’s eyes, now wide with shock.
‘Trance…’
Harper sank to the floor and his chest shuddered, sank…and although the 2 humans, Nietzschean, Magog and Golden pixie all willed it to rise again, it never would.

Trance sat bolt upright in bed, her sheets wet with sweat, her scream still echoing around her quarters. It was a vision, one she had dreaded for months. Even in her shocked, sleep deprived state, she knew that she had to make a decision

Ever since she had swapped places with her younger self, she had known this day might come again. But she thought she had done enough already to stop it. She’d been wrong.

She thought of Harper and all the times they’d shared. Stealing the mad Perseid’s diary, fighting off Magog and Nietzschean, trying to restore the Commonwealth. Tears came readily as she tried desperately to think of something, anything that would stop this happening again.

The memories seemed to fade as every idea she had ended with the same horrible scene, Harper staring at her and whispering her name. She wished that she had never come to this ship, that she had never met Beka, Harper, Rev, Dylan or Tyr. As more memories assaulted her mind, she smiled in spite of herself. On the other hand, she thought, she wouldn’t trade the good memories for anything.
